Langimo

Spanish · French · Italian · German · English · Dutch · Portuguese

Talk with your tutor anytime, about anything.

Talk as long as you like, about whatever you like: your weekend, a job interview, the trip you’re planning to Rome. Your tutor is free whenever you are, answers at your level, from first words to native-like, and keeps every word one tap from its meaning. It’s how people have always learned languages, by talking. Only much faster.

¿Qué tal fue la entrevista del jueves, María?

Lucía remembers what you tell her, and forgets anything you ask her to.

“¡Hola! Soy Lucía y vivo en Valencia…” 10 seconds of the voice you get in the app.

How a session goes

  1. 1

    Pick something to talk about

There are 55 scenes and 60 topics, all numbered. No. 1 is ordering at a café. No. 18 is asking your boss for a raise. Or skip the menu and just chat.

  2. 2

    Answer in your own words

Type, or tap the mic and talk. If you’re stuck, Hint suggests a few replies you could send, and “How do I say…?” turns a sentence in your own language into one you can use.

  3. 3

    See what to fix

Every message you send is checked. Mistakes are explained in a line and saved to My mistakes. When a sentence was already right, you’ll see “Looks natural” and nothing else. The words you missed come back in your next conversation, and using one right counts as practice.

Choose who you talk to.

Every language has four tutors. Each one has a job and a city, and a voice of their own. Mateo teaches history in Seville and plays flamenco guitar. Inès is a marine biologist in Nantes. They’re AI characters, and they’re good company. Press Hear to listen before you pick, and switch whenever you like: your level and words stay where they are.

The details we fussed over

  • Tap any word

Tap fui and you get “I went,” the dictionary form ir (to go), and the conjugation table for the tense it’s in. Nouns come with their gender and plural. Words you look up in your tutor’s replies are saved to My words on their own. Translate shows the whole sentence in your help language.

  • Corrections with a native rewrite

Each mistake gets a one-line reason, then the full sentence comes back the way a native would put it. Missing accents are grouped on one line, so they don’t bury the grammar.

  • She remembers you

Mention your job, a trip in December or the interview on Thursday, and your tutor keeps a short note, then asks how it went next time. Nothing about health, money or ID numbers is kept. You can read and delete every note in Settings › Memory.

  • Help when you’re stuck

Hint offers a few replies you could send. “How do I say…?” takes what you mean in your own language and gives you up to three ways to say it, ready to insert.

  • A reminder, and a streak

Choose the days and the time. Your tutor sends the nudge, as a notification or an email. The streak grows on days you reach your daily goal, and every Monday there’s a short recap of the week before.

  • Voices worth listening to

Replies can be read aloud as they arrive. The turtle button repeats one slowly. In the iPhone app a big mic sits next to the text field: tap, talk, tap again, and your reply is written down and sent.

  • Practice that starts from your last chat

After each conversation, Langimo sorts what came up into three piles. Fix holds the words you got wrong or looked up twice. New holds what you just heard or tapped. Refresh brings back words you already know, spaced out so they don’t fade. Press Practice and you get a 12-card mix, fixes first.

Then your tutor works a few of those words into the next conversation, once or twice a reply and never as a quiz. Use one correctly yourself and it counts as a review.

A scene gives you a role, a partner with a name, and a short list of goals. At the pharmacy you explain what’s wrong, ask for something that helps, ask how to take it, and pay. Goals tick off as you reach them, and you’re free to wander off script.

55 scenes and 60 topics in all seven languages. Topics run from “The weekend” to “Superstitions & luck” and “Everyday dilemmas.” In the iPhone app they sit on two wheels on the Home screen, and a good flick keeps them spinning for a while.

A level that explains itself.

Twelve levels, from your first words to native-like. Langimo watches the small signals below. Struggle and the sentences get shorter. Cruise and you get longer replies, more tenses and the odd idiom. Past C1, your tutor stops making allowances: phrasal verbs, slang from their city, jokes you have to catch. Every change comes with one plain sentence saying why. If you’d rather decide yourself, pin a level and it stays put.

Before you sign up

Which languages can I learn?

Spanish, French, Italian, German, English, Dutch and Portuguese (Brazil). Translations, hints and explanations come in your help language: English, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Turkish, Indonesian, Ukrainian, Japanese, Korean or Hindi.

Can I learn two languages at once?

One at a time, and you can switch whenever you want. Each language keeps its own level, words, mistakes and streak, so a week of Italian won’t touch your Spanish.

Is it for beginners?

Yes, and for people who are nearly fluent too. A 2-minute chat finds your level. At level 1 (A1) replies are one short sentence and a translation is always a tap away. At level 12 (Native-like) your tutor talks to you the way they talk to friends: idioms, phrasal verbs, a bit of local slang. When something you write is correct but no native would say it, you see how they would.

Do I need the iPhone app?

To practice, no. The website works in any computer or phone browser and uses the same account. The app isn’t out yet, so leave your email and we’ll tell you when it is.

Is it really free?

Yes, while we’re in beta. Everything is included and there’s no card to enter, so there’s nothing to cancel. Paid plans come later: Standard at $9.99 a month or $59 a year, and Plus at $16.99 a month or $99 a year for twice the conversation. Beta users hear about them first.

What happens when the beta ends?

We’ll email you before anything changes. Paid plans will be bought in the iPhone app through your Apple ID. Your words, mistakes and conversations stay in your account either way.

Is there a usage limit?

A generous one. You can send 200 replies a day, and there’s a monthly cap that only very heavy use reaches. The limits are there to stop scripts and shared accounts. If you ever reach one, the app tells you when it resets. After the beta, Standard includes about 1½ hours of conversation with your tutor a week and Plus about 3 hours. Word practice and flashcards don’t count toward it.

Can I talk instead of typing?

Yes. Tap the mic, speak, and your reply is written down for you. Your tutor’s replies can be read aloud as they arrive, and any reply can be replayed slowly.

How does Langimo decide what I practice?

From your own conversations. Mistakes and words you looked up twice go to Fix, words you just met go to New, and words you know come back now and then in Refresh. The next chat brings a few of them back, so you practice them by using them.

What can’t it do yet?

Hands-free live chat is in the iPhone app; on the website you tap the mic for each reply. There’s no pronunciation scoring, and there’s no Android app yet (the website works fine in a phone browser). We’d rather you hear that from us.

Is my data private?

Your conversations are stored so you can pick them up on any device. Your tutor also keeps short notes on what you mention, like your job or a trip, but never health, money or ID numbers. Settings › Memory lists every note, with a delete button on each and a switch to turn memory off. We don’t sell data or show ads, and you can delete your account in Settings at any time. The privacy policy names every company that handles data for us.
